Portugal was once thought to be the edge of the world and from a perch atop its awesome Atlantic coastal cliffs, its easy to see why. Today, the country is one of the most underestimated golf destinations in the world, thanks not only to the quality of the coastal courses but their location in two distinct pockets in the west and south. The mighty Algarve region is loaded with as much golf as you can handle. However, don’t miss out on the Lisbon area, home to several of the country’s best courses and know for its interesting and diverse culture shaped by an incredible amalgamation of foreign influences.

West Cliffs
West Cliffs just opened in 2017 and designer Cynthia Dye readily admits she didn't have to do much to turn the amazing coastal terrain into a golfing masterpiece. As a result, the native environment was largely undisturbed. Rolling sand dunes are interspersed with coastal vegetation while pine groves overlook the Atlantic Ocean and nearby Óbidos Laguna from above.Oitavos Dunes
The now 4-time European Tour Portuguese Open host at Oitavos Dunes gives off a parkland feel to a links layout (or maybe vice-a-versa?). Call it what you want but it's pure. Umbrella pines are one of the defining characteristics of Arthur Hill's out and back design, and they line most of the front nine before the course opens up to the Atlantic and Sintra Mountains.Quinta Do Lago - South
Quinta Do Lago actually has three excellent courses, but the South is the oldest and best. The 7-time Portuguese Open host course counts Colin Montgomerie among its list of champions, and is set among umbrella pines, lakes, and wild flowers, overlooking the serene Ria Formosa Natural Park.Vilamoura - Old
Vilamoura is a popular resort area along the central shores of the Algarve with no fewer than five golf courses and plenty more to do. The Old Course is the gem of the area, though, and is one of the Algarves oldest and most significant courses. Impressive pines make straight driving imperative, as the small greens are tough to hit from anything but the fairway.Praia D'El Rey
Praia D"El Ray is located just over an hour north of Lisbon on the Costa de Prata and, similar to neighboring West Cliffs, the course beautifully marries parkland golf among fragrant pines with links-like holes across the craggy dunes. Its a great mix of holes but the allure is certainly the coastal setting and the 13th-16th showcase the Silver Coast's 'wow' factor.Monte Rei
Perhaps the cream of the Algarve crop, Monte Rei stands out both for its luxuriousness and relative seclusion compared to the other top courses in the region. The club is located in the hills near the Spanish border and the rural setting will inspire a wonderful sense of isolation. Beyond the setting, it's probably the bunkering that is most memorable; not surprising for a Jack Nicklaus design.Penha Longa
The list of things to love about Penha Longa is long: Trent Jones Jr.'s creative craftsmanship, the coastal vistas, and its stunning location up and down the southern foothills of the Sintra Mountains. If the wind picks up, forget about your score and just soak in the views down to the Atlantic coastal towns and beyond.Palmares
Palamares
Billed as the "jewel in the crown of the Algarve," the Praia and Lagos nines at Palmares stand out from the crowd in Portugal's golfing mecca. The layout is characterized by exciting movement across substantial elevation changes and over diverse landscapes as the course winds down to the Bay of Lagos.troia1
Troia
Troia is acutally the name of a peninsula sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and Sado Estuary on which the Robert Trent Jones designed golf course sits. As evidenced by Sam Torrance's score near level par to win the Portuguese Open, the course is really hard. Hopefully, though, the incredible views across to the Arrábida Mountain will lighten the blow.san-lorenzo-golf
San Lorenzo
Designed by the renowned Joe Lee with the help of the good Lord (at least according Lee himself), San Lorenzo is one of the Algarve's most cherished courses. The figure eight layout dramatically brushes up against marshland and the Ria Formosa lagoon on a couple of occasions but the wooded inland holes are a joy as well.Amendoeira
Modern golf meets the Algarve at Amendoeira, where two 21st-century championship courses sit alongside the floodlit 9-hole Academy Course. On the most undulating part of the property, where views of the surrounding countryside are brilliant, sits the resort's crown jewel: the Faldo Course. The design is awesome, although perhaps Nick Faldo himself is one of the few who could safely traverse the difficult obstacles it presents.
